There are many things that drivers need to be aware of when driving on roads in the Toronto area. While other vehicles are likely the first thing that comes to mind, they are by no means the only other objects that need to be looked out for. In some situations pedestrians interact with cars as well. Drivers should always keep their eyes out for these individuals. There is good reason for this. When a pedestrian is struck by a car, the injuries inflicted can be devastating. The force of the impact can cause serious injuries or even death.
The number of pedestrians who have been hurt or killed in Toronto, in an incident involving a vehicle, is up this year. In the first 10 months, a total of 1,513 people were struck. Of those individuals, 34 died. That is 90 percent more than 2011 when 18 pedestrians were killed in accidents.
Some of the pedestrian accidents involved trucks. Recognizing this, some people believe that laws should be passed that require the installation of side guards on the large vehicles. The idea is the guards would keep pedestrians from becoming caught in the undercarriage, or from ending up under the wheels. Close to half of all pedestrian accidents involving trucks involve the person making contact with the truck’s side. The city of Toronto could pass a law to this effect if it so chose.
